However I did just the reverse. I became a jazz fan while in HS but had never listened to classical. Then maybe my second year in college I was exposed to Bach's Brandenburg Concertos and enjoyed them a great deal. That lead me to other Baroque composers and more Bach, and eventually from there onto other classical styles.
So even as a non-musician I can see structural symmetry and improvisation links between the two.
