1. I prefer '81 performance
2. '55 was recorded in analogue to begin with and there are plenty of original Columbia issues around
3. A State of Wonder reissue from 2002 ( done with the same engineer for the Razor & Tie reissue ) sounds wonderful. Luckily I have decent CD players, so this release is just fine for me.
Sony in the past have released some ghastly Gould vinyl reissues ( Beethoven Symphony 5 comes to my mind: right up there with a noisy Erato pressing ) Currently there are few from Doxy and DOL reissues of the same title, too.
If your copy is the Sony Legacy remaster from the early 80s ( Dutch pressing ), then there is a chance that the new Razor & Tie release *might* be better.
This is remastered and reengineered by Ray Moore & Samuel Carter and the sound? just meh. Ok but not great.
