Proper catridge position?

In my computer room I have a sweet DENON DP-52F which I bought some years ago at a record shop for a song. I have a Audio Technica AT440ML which is supposed to be a good cartridge!? It would skip on any record, & I thought I had it balanced properly. My question is where should the cart be placed, in the middle of the head shell like I have it or more to the front or rear of it? Also I thought balancing it was center of the arm mount guide? I now have it balanced center of the arm holder ( peace which sticks out to the side ) & it is not skipping anymore. Still I would like to know if I have the cartridge positioned right in the head shell! TIA for any help!
