Nate, sorry I can't comment from personal experience, but over the years I've read many statements against glass shelving. And I suspect that applies even more to turntables than with amps, preamps, CD players, or whatever, simply due to the principle of extracting sound from mechanical motion.
You ask about maple being hard and transmitting sound. Not being a physicist I can't offer expert testimony, but I suspect it relates to which materials transmit the vibrational energy (i.e. drain it off) compared to which ones reflect it back. Just remember that every substance can vibrate at some frequency. And maple, being one of the wood examples typically chosen to build instruments, apparently at least is compatible with musical tones.
Cutting boards (inexpensive) and Mapleshade have already been suggested as sources for maple. There are several others, including Timber Nation. Should be easy to find.
A very different solution might be slate. Several hobbyists have commented favorably on slate plinths so I wonder the sedimentary benefits of slate might not apply to platforms as well. The benefit there is far lower cost since only a simple rectangle, possibly a couple inches thick, is all that is needed. No special cutouts needed.
