Hi all,
I was putting a bargain turntable system together for the 23 year old son of a friend. Kid is into records. So I rebuilt a Scott LK72 for him and got a very good condition TD 150 from a friend for him. A customer of mine donated a Stanton 881s to the party for the cost of postage. I gave my friend $100 for the TD 150 and bought a belt for it. That's it. I just sent it off to the kid and I know he will have fun with it. I had it playing in the living room and it sounded great. So, for a brief time I had a TD 150, and my TD 124 and TD 125 MkII in the living room for a photo. Couldn't resist. The TD 150, sounded really good. Not quite up to my TD125 Mk II with the SME and V15 IV, but it was not embarrased. The T124 is a whole different sound of course. All of this really made me appreciate that old TD125 II with the SME arm. I have owned that since I bought it used at the end of college..about 1978. It has been trouble-free. A couple of belts just because. I just love the ease of the SME. It all just works and is not fussy to use. Dust cover works perfectly, platter comes up to speed quickly and strobe never moves. It just works and sounds great. I know that combo with the V15 is not state of the art or anything, but is sure works well. Listening to the 881s reminded me of all the old Stantons we heard in college. Haven't heard one for years. But it also really made me appreciate the smoothness and presentation of that SME/V15 combo. I know the 881 was in an inferior arm on the TD 150 and all of that. Not a fair comparison. Just that listening to that combo and realizing how good a startup rig that is for the kid really made me appreciate how much I like this old 125 II/SME/V15. There were millions of that combo out there. How many of you still have one..? Mine is spinning Blues for Allah, the music never stopped right now:) Just because I can.....
cheers,
Don
