RE: Musical Fidelity M1 Turntable

From a reliability point of view, the only likely things to fail are in the power supply or (less likely) the motor. Belts are an obvious "consumable" that you will need to deal with periodically. Beyond that, it doesn't matter how "late to the party" MF were - any good mechanical engineer with a basic understanding of vibrations could design the plinth/suspension and software is available for doing finite element analysis to refine the design. There is actually very LITTLE excuse for bad designs these days except through ignorance. Given their product portfolio, MF are electronics engineers mainly I should imagine and they may very well have outsourced the mechanical design to a consultancy firm.

The bearing is likely outsourced to an external supplier and the arm is an SME so actually there is very little to that turntable that you need to worry about. MF already have good electronics engineers so the power supply side of things is going to be fundamentally well-designed with reliability in mind.

Good engineering is all about understanding the problem to be solved and creating a solution. If the input specifications are known, then a good engineer can design a product that meets them.

The sound quality of the turntable largely depends on your own ability (or the dealer) to align the cartridge properly.

Having said that, the specifications of the turntable are decidedly uninspiring for the price - it depends what it will be offered to you for and what else is on the market at that price. I agree with the others that if you HAVE $5k to blow on a deck, go for the best and pass on it.

Why not wait to see what the new Technics DD deck will be like? Get yourself a good arm... and you're set!
