RE: Papst motor rotation

Thanks for the heads up. I thought the Papst motor had less noise/vibrations than the original ROK motor, at least the advertised noise floor on the ROKs was about 10dB lower on idler drive TTs that used the Papst motor.

I did anticipate problems with noise/vibration on this project, so I'm thinking of about a 50lb CLD plinth, with alternating layers of Baltic birch and MDF (I'm open to ideas here). I might add a slab of slate on the bottom as well. I've also found out about some appropriate silicone gel isolation grommets that are supposed to significantly improve the damping and isolation of the motor. They aren't cheap though, at $14.70 each, but hopefully will be beneficial.

I also have some isolation tweaks in mind for the WTL tonearm clone that should help. From what I understand, the design of that tonearm is pretty well damped to begin with. Hopefully I can overcome the big problem of motor vibrations inherent with idler arm TTs.

One thing I've been contemplating, is that small metal top plate on the L-34, and how that could be improved. Seems to me it would be a relatively simple matter to drill a few holes and mount the platter bearing, drive mechanism, and motor on another larger top plate, and solidly attach that to the plinth, making better transfer for vibrations. I'd think a top plate made from a different material, something like Dupont Corian, might be good, to further damp the mechanism. Seriously considering trying this. Ever heard of anyone doing this?
