RE: hmmmmm......

....well..........

I think choice #1 is fun to look at. We've heard of the pressure cooker bomb. Now we've got a pressure cooker turntable. Hopefully this one isn't rigged to blow up.

Ok....almost more seriously, it might be fun to imagine what may lie within the ribbed enclosure. A fluid damping system designed to soften the cogging that occurs as the rotor gets its little kick from each pole within the stator that propels it.

Or maybe its an elaborate eddy current brake designed to do the same.

Or maybe its....... a joke and the designer is just having some fun by grafting some spare turntable parts onto the ribbed casting.

I tend to go with the 'joke' scenario.

But other parts of the design have problems. The belt is engaging the platter far too high up. The motor housing stands too tall and may invite the problems normally associated with having a center of gravity completely wrong for the task at hand. (too high)

The i-pod dock is a give-away. This is where the designer's head is at. He regards vinyl playback as being anachronistic in today's world. He's laughing at the vinyl hobby with his 'pressure cooker turntable'.

#2.
Take a plank of wood, bolt a platter bearing to it. Bolt a motor to it. Bolt a tonearm to it and.....guess what? You've got a turntable. In its essence that is how easy it is to make a turntable. you just need a fairly wide board of just about any workable material and some old turntable parts. And even as simplistic as this, it just might sound pretty good.

But, you know, I'll take a pass.

PS: After looking at #1 and #2 in the op,the TT below seems to come to mind. Only it is better , imho.

The diy'er that made this one was serious. He wanted to combine his artistic vision, such as it may be, with the mechanical function of record playback.
