Slapshot -
I have one ($699 open box from Audio Advisor). Here's my version - originally I had a $200 Parasound Z phono preamp a friend sold me. It went on the fritz, so I borrowed a friends PS Audio phono pre (don't remember the name, but it's the one that is no longer in production and retailed for $1000). Anyway it got several very good reviews. I was expecting more out of it - it sounded much more like the $200 Parasound than the RS in my system.
So, I had read about the RS a few weeks ago and happened upon an open box unit from Audio Advisor. As soon as I heard it, I knew it was a keeper. In general, a MUCH better fit for my system and tastes. More rhythmc and dynamic with more, better defined bottom end. I rarely make immediate decisions on a piece of audio gear. I can run a balanced TT in my system from cartridge to the amp in my system as the RS has balanced inputs and outputs. Also, the RS has loading options for both MM and MC carts and that variable loading option for MC carts. Way cool.
In short, I really like what I hear from mine. I don't second think my decision at all.
Ooops, forgot to mention you have an upgrade path of adding a Pro-ject power supply in the future - an additional way to lower the noise floor. I think the matching power supply is about $700 retail.
Hope this helps - - -
