The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is looking into a new generation of vacuum tubed technology. While this is not strictly related to Vinyl playback, keep in mind that many technological breakthroughs have come from defense and/or aerospace research. DARPA is looking at the methods required to produce vacuum tubed devices and that could trickle down to new vacuum tube devices in the future.
How about a 1kW power amp based on vacuum tubes? Or a vacuum tube capable of amplifying very very small signals with very low noise levels. That would be nice for phono preamps...
