RE: "It's all about the music and the performance..."

James Boyk (Professor at Caltech) once referred to himself as a "recordist" rather than a recording engineer.

A recording engineer's job is to make a hit record so that everyone makes money, a recordist's job is to capture the sound of the event as truthfully as he can.

The "gimmicked" recording (Why Hi-Fi Experts Disagree) can sound "great" and be a lot of fun to listen to but they are not Hi-Fi.

IMO the only way to judge how good of a job a playback system is doing is to first know what acoustic instruments sound like and then play a non-gimmicked recording of same.

Most recordings in the world of pop are gimmicked.
