When I first heard LP reproduction as a child it was from a Garrard Model 98 idler wheel turntable.
I have owned a lot of different turntables in my life. Some sounded disappointing even with great reviews and customer approval ratings. Idlers have this way to communicating you are there. Even mediocre recordings sound better.
What differentiates idlers? It is the moment of inertia.
SP (Special Products) was a Technics division catering to the studio and mastering community. They built the SP-02 lathe motor for the Neumann record lathe that revolutionized the sonics of the best sounding LP's you will ever hear.
The SP 15 has the same moment of inertia as the SP 10MKII. This is quite a bit more than the SL1200. It is also a quieter turntable.
At the time the SP 10MKII was selling upwards of $3k with the Obsidian plinth. an EPA 100 tonearm and a decent cartridge. The SL1200 was selling for about $400.00 without a cartridge.
I have owned several SL1200 models and own a couple of SP 15 turntables. The SP 15's sound superior in bass response, dynamics, and maintaining the sound stage even under difficult auditory climaxes.
The SL1200 is portable, it is built like a tank, and it keeps time just as well as the SP 15 or 25 models. It is more obtainable and can still be found for a reasonable amount of money.
I love them both. If you are after world quality playback the SP 15 can give you more than a taste of the high end.
If you can get an SP 15 buy one. You need to make sure it maintains all three speeds. If not then wait for another to come up for sale.
