I like the idea of a compact nice looking self-contained table, it could be useful somewhere and is so much better than a Crosley.
However the vertical orientation reminds me of the difference between a grand piano and an upright. When you play a grand you are pushing against the force of gravity when you strike the key. However with an upright the hammer is oriented vertically and strikes horizontally--no gravity. So they have to use a spring. A spring is in no way as perfect as gravity (at least for piano striking I can attest to that). I would think it might be similar in the tonearm, in that a spring would have negative effects on the pickup.
At least with a piano, you are going the upright route to save 15 sq feet of floor space and thousands of dollars. Here it seems like you are saving a 6-8 inches of table space, and no cost reduction. I can't see any other reason than it looks different.
Despite that, if someone gave me one I'd probably have some fun with it.
