Got the call from Barb this afternoon to let me know of Mike's passing, but I let her know I had just heard it here first! I think that it may have warmed her heart a bit to know how well he was loved by the audio community.
Anyway, to add a few things about Mike's mentorship:
1. I thought I knew a lot about audio gear- until I met Mike.
2. I thought I knew a bit about music- until I met Mike. He made sure I became more acquainted especially with jazz, as he gave me full access to his huge collection, which was quite an education indeed. Like having an audio lending library right at my fingertips...
3. Mike got me started as an audio reviewer. I remember the pride I felt when he gave me the "thumbs up" after reading my first draft of my very first published review. I had arrived!
4. I am also a better person for getting to know Mike's family on a regular basis... especially Barb. She's a real peach!
The big lug will be missed by all of us, but having seen him recently, I knew it was "his time." We'll all remember him fondly, especially his gentle but firm way of communicating with us and mentoring us.
I thank him and his family for all they have done to usher me further into the audio world, which is something of a gift that will continue to grow as long as I live.
Best wishes and condolences to Barb and the boys,
"Dr. John" Richardson
