A lot of people don't seem to understand what is valuable to a collector - like you say, they assume that ANY record is valuable.
My boss knows I'm a collector and vinyl enthusiast. When his parents sold up the family home, he asked me if I was interested in his parents' record collection. He was rather disappointed (after asking what sort of records he had and what condition they were in) when I told him they were of no value at all and that he would be lucky to get anything for them at all - they were mostly 70s and 80s pop "greatest hits collections" from budget labels and had been well used....the sort of record normally thrown out as a 5 for $1 type of thing.
