Using your fingers to spread the glue makes as much sense as using them to make your kids' PB&J. We use a tool to makes those samiches (sorry for the snark David, but it's true, and you're not the only one using their fingers)!
Find an old or current credit card or similar plastic flexible thing. As many rotations as needed to get an even spread across the surface. Wipe the card edge off nice and clean after each side. You don't want ANY glue on there when you first press it to the glued surface.
If any glue gets on the label, just wipe it off with a damp paper towel, which should be handy while doing this. I've also just let it dry and it peeled off perfectly.
