Back in the 1970s when I had one of these new, that overhang checker got me in the ball park for mounting the cartridge. Seemed to work just fine, but that was the 1970s, I was still in college, and the Pioneer was my first decent turntable. I'm not sure anyone used a protractor then, either, certainly not among any of my acquaintances. (I used a Shure M91ED cartridge--they were everywhere then. Not expensive for the time, and a terrific tracker.)
