All kidding aside

A girlfriend of mine in college had the Ansermet set, on London STS. That was back in my days when I detested Brahms - I had studied both the first piano concerto and the second symphony, and didn't like either. We listen to the recording of the 4th symphony together, once. I have come around on the symphony, but still am repelled by the first piano concerto (for the record, I feel the same about Tchaikovsky's first piano concerto).

Richard Kaplan gave Ansermet's Brahms a thumbs-up in a review of the Ansermet edition on CD, as I recall. The LPs are surprisingly hard to locate - I doubt if many were sold. Not many believed in Ansermet's ability to project Brahms and Beethoven, certainly not John Culshaw.
