The answer is yes. By the first measure in fact: listen to the unapologetic bassoonist wake up and elbow his way to the coffee machine as unapologetically as everyone else.
Some people think the Suisse Romande sounds "scrappy." I love their sound, esp. the piquant winds.
The sound engineers in Geneva often hit a home run with Ansermet as well. Same here, if a little less sparkly on top than usual. The orchestra sounds so...real.
My desert island Brahms box set is Furtwangler's. (I can no longer listen to anyone else's 1st and 4th.)
Brahm's 3rd? Wand's on DHM or ProArte for the most exquisite 2nd mov't, Walter's w/the Columbia for the most persuasive and dramatic 1st mov't.
For newbies, "audiophiles" and the jaded, Ansermet's 2nd might hit the spot.

- Glad you liked his Brahms 1st. I assumed its more stormy and "Wagnerian" quality wouldn't have suited him - jdaniel@jps.net 07:31:54 05/23/15 (2)

- No worries : ) His performances often just feel so "alive." Only his Debussy fails to satisfy me, with one - jdaniel@jps.net 08:52:26 05/23/15 (0)

- Let's add some perspective: "thin and scrappy" in Tchaikovsky and perhaps Rimsky? Yes; but in Ravel and Bartok? No, IMHO - jdaniel@jps.net 18:27:10 05/22/15 (0)
