Currently produced mono discs have been cut using a stereo cutter fed with a mono signal. So the correct stylus required to play them will have the same dimensions as used for normal stereo. The only exception are records issued by the Electric Recording Company who use one of the few mono cutter heads left in use on their own vintage lathe.
There is an advantage, however, in using a modern mono cartridge as this will be insensitive to vertical modulations with a resultant reduction in surface noise and (I understand) a subjective gain in power and solidity. However a mono cartridge is not necessary, only desirable.
