Both with & without on 2 tables

I originally bought a Falcon for my VPI Scout. That was a nice improvement, and used a strobe & funky phone app to try to get the speed exact.

Then I got a high-power beta version of the Eagle to test with my 23W Papst-motored Empire-based DIY table. As part of the beta test, I got a Roadrunner and a couple of sensors, one for the Scout & one for the Empire.

The Roadrunner feedback system is not necessary, but it is really nice in a couple of ways.
1) on the Scout, the motor pod can be nudged every once in a while and when that happens, the speed definitely moves away from the 33.3. I probably can't notice the difference audibly, but the Roadrunner independently shows me the difference. When connected via the feedback cable it will automatically adjust on the fly (but slowly over a couple of revolutions, so never audibly).

2) On the Empire, the correct speed is dependent on getting the exactly correct thickness & width of belt. Said belts cost $30 or more. I can use a cheap belt, which otherwise causes the table to run fast (like 5-7% fast). The Roadrunner automagically adjusts the Eagle speed to exactly correct at 3 digits of accuracy. If I disconnect the Roadrunner from the feedback cable, the speed will hold quite nicely, so it's not necessary once the frequency is adjusted for the exact speed. You could do this manually with something like the KAB strobe, but the combo makes it simple and I never think about it again unless trying a different belt. The Empire has a knurled nut on the motor mount that angles the motor spindle slightly for small speed adjustment. I've found that it is quieter at some angles than others. I can adjust the angle for minimum noise and then use the Roadrunner to correct the speed. So it's a nice advantage on this table.

That said, it's a luxury, not a necessity. But i like it and will keep it.
