My take is similar to yours! But admit I am too busy with different versions. Recent trip in my wife's car, HDD copy of Szell's Cleveland set of 3 and 8. Loved it, and she remarked, "so precise." I found his precision of the 8 mixed with humor and inflections. Perfect.
Toscanini has a good overview below. I have the B5 from a RCA LP. Horrendous sound, great performance.
I haven't played my copy methodically, and I believe some of the symphonies are with the VSO and not VPO.
I grew up adoring his Mozart late symphonies with BPO.
I was given a whole set of DVD's with VPO and VSO Mozart 28-41. Better, very studio with the players looking very stiff on platforms.
