give the platter a nudge in the right direction when starting it up.

I used a Thorens TD160 (with a faulty low voltage motor run cap) in this manner from 1978-1986.

Only thing is that I still/currently give my current TT (Thorens TD125II) this same "nudge" out of motor memory/habit.

Checking the connection(s) as mentioned is a good idea, but your previous soldering job may have damaged the motor run cap.
