Efficient speakers are certainly a good idea any time, but also, you could make up the gain not provided from a passive preamplifier anywhere in else in the chain, up to and including the speakers. For me, the problem with a passive preamplifier is more to do with impedance matching, which can result in hf roll-off. And I have to agree with Opus; they've all sounded a bit "dull" to me, possibly for that reason. But I don't know exactly why they seem to lack "jump". Yet I know many who swear by passive preamplifiers, and I am in no position to say their particular set-ups are not excellent.
