I guess it depends on your point of view, but I prefer my vinyl to have an intimate connection to the turntable platter for damping vibrations within the vinyl introduced by the stylus tracking the groove. It is my opinion, spot mats like yours produce a noisier background than a solid connection to the platter. Short of a vacuum platter, I prefer a flat hard rubber mat to which the LP may be clamped. To me, the difference is noticeable by the level of groove noise in-between cuts. As always, YMMV.
