401: build quality is pro level. These were designed and manufactured with broadcast studio use in mind.
Choice of tonearm is open. This TT deserves the best arm you can mount to it.
Lenco GL 75. Excellent reputation. The TT begs for modifications to unlock otherwise obscured sound quality.
One needs to:
lose the tonearm
remove the light weight stamped steel chassis with something akin to a PTP (Peter's Top Plate) aluminum plate over a mass damped plinth. Mount best tonearm one can afford. Now its a serious contender.
That's the popular lore on both models.
In comparison to the Lenco I think the Garrard is closer to its ultimate performance level as it comes from the factory. Just add a mass damped plinth, then a top quality arm and cartridge.
Besides, I feel the need to own one of these Garrards, whether it be 401 or 301.
