While MDF has some interesting vibration handling capabilities, it comes up lacking in the ridgidity and strength departments. For an mdf shelf I would find a plate of aluminum 1/8" thick and screw that to the bottom of the MDF board. That will improve stiffness of the shelf quite a bit while making use of the other qualities that MDF offers in the audio world.
I like the idea of decoupling the shelf from the rack by means of silicone gel pads or something or another. It has been done that way many times by some high end rack manufacturers. (take a look at SRA)
