RE: Tonearm Resonant Frequency - Quite Low

I've had my first revelation into how arm mass matching effects tracking and sound quality. I was using a 2g shim to weight up the arm with the v.d.Hul Colibri, but the problem here was the small counterweight supplied with the Audiomods arm would run out of real estate before the desired VTF was dialled in. So, on goes the heavy counter weight (my guess is this brought the effective arm mass up to 17-18g).

I didn't listen to the system much during the eight months or so it was set this way, but when I did have the records spinning I thought they all sound thin and bright with no weight or foundation to the music. It was only while monitoring some rips over headphones that I noticed mistracking of dynamic peaks and what sounded like a heart beat every time the needle tracked a warp.

Knowing full well that mistracking can cause permanent damage to records I sought some help in figuring out what was wrong. In conversation with a local analog sage I decided to bring the arm mass down. It's now near 11g, the bottom of the spec'd arm mass for the cartridge, by mounting the cartridge without a shim and re-used the the small counterweight. Not only did the warp "beat" cease, but so did the mistracking, and the dynamics and drive of the bass is now in full effect, top end has smoothed out and is noticeably cleaner. It's like I have a whole new system, and I'm listening to records almost nightly for the first time.
