Welcome Licorice Pizza (LP) lovers! Setup guides and Vinyl FAQ.

More than 4 years, maybe more than 5

My son broke the stylus of my Goldring MM cart on my Rega P3 (upgrades etc.). I couldn't get it together to mount my Benz wood body and try out the redone Flemming head amp (by Flemming, at the tail end of his run). And life made the cost of the new Goldring stylus seem high... At some point, I stopped imagining listening to lps again would add enough to my spirits to be worth the trouble. Without a cd player - at that point I'm just playing cds or listening to YouTube through the Aux input in the stereo... Pretty sad, right?

5 years pass...

Neighbors up the street give me a beat Technics SL-bd20, which I initially said I had no use for. P-mount. Then a couple of days later I thought what the hell, and said I would like to take it. Automatic shut off features aren't even working! I bought a Shure M92E cart, popped it in, and started spinning.

It was wonderful!!

Better than I had remembered, and reopened a whole new world of exploration in my record collection. Some things were totally new to me. Like I never listened to any of the Mahler lps I had accumulated. And there are some old favorites that I really want to listen to at some particular moment, but not the rest of the year. And I've been listening to some other music I haven't engaged with in more than 25 years...

Truth though, my life was complex during that time, and I was kind of depressed about my own situation, even as I was helping other people with theirs. I still don't have the budget to get my P3 serviced or get a new Goldring stylus. And my Benz suspension is probably shot, too, even if I had the patience to mount the thing on the (probably) working Marantz table I have. But I'm spinning, and enjoying it - a lot. And it is a message to myself that I'm getting my life on the track it needs to be on (although past overspending maybe said the opposite!)

So, iff you haven't tried playing some lps. Give it a try. It will either grab you or it won't.
