I also considered the Audio Technica mono MC cartridge. My general experience with AT is limited, but those I've heard have been a bit more edgy and exciting than I like. The Ortofon is well-ordered and even-handed, and dynamically quite a bit better than I expected.
The Ortofon is a true mono, so it simply parallels its output in each channel. My preamp does NOT have a mono switch, but that has not been a problem. The spherical stylus profile is the major advantage -- I suspect it's the major reason why it sounds better on my old mono recordings.
I've just been to Staples to get a bunch of stick-on dots to put on the spines of all my mono recordings, so I can pick them out visually and put them on the right turntable (one with mono cart, one with stereo). My phono stage is an Aesthetix Rhea, which has 3 separate inputs, so I don't have to do any wand-switching or cable swapping to play a mono recording.
Mostly, I've found the 2M mono to just be a fun cartridge. Not looking for super high fidelity from these recordings so I've been pleasantly surprised at how good many of them sound this way.
Good luck & enjoy the ride...
