Thanks! I always wondered how his customized (for specific arm) protractors differed from the "Universal" version that was once available for download from the Vinyl Engine (no longer is).
The Universal version has a straight guide line is used to position the protractor itself, which is fixed in position when the projection of that line passes through the center of the arm's pivot. Thus fixed alignment is then done in normal fashion; it has grids for Baerwald an the other two common schemes.
I wonder how universal it actually is, and I imagine a custom version for a specific pivot-to-spindle distance is best, yet I must say I obtain good results that seem quite consistent with alignments done on one of my tables that has its own custom protractor.
[Just to be entirely clear, the customized protractor doesn't have the guide/positioning line mentioned, now I understand it doesn't need it.]
