Us or Them... Play music OR listen to music...

The subject line sums up my musical life about 20 years ago (Goodness! Has it been THAT long now???).

I was a dumb 20-something, and just wasn't into the vinyl (or music) collection the way I am now. I had also playing bass guitar with a band that had toured across Canada (an eternal summer-time of small clubs and pretty much sleeping in the van), and had just had a record contract negotiation fall through, resulting in that band's break up as well.

I still wanted to pursue music, but the income was drying up fast. So what did I do? Sold ALL my audio gear. It came down to one over the other- can't make (at least a little) money playing records all day and sitting on my duff...

Said system that was sold was a Linn Axis table (my first one), Yamaha tape deck, bottom of the line Sony CD player, Precision Fidelity C-7 preamp (later owned the C-8, which became the donor for my DIY), Linn Powertek (gutless amp when I think back) and a really crappy set of Pioneer speakers (so bad, I don't even remember the model!).

I didn't touch audio of any kind (save for playing live and recording with another band), for another two or three years... At that point, I vowed I would never be without audio gear again.

Now a few years later, a similar situation presented itself (in the form of my first marriage)- I was about ready to sell my bass gear and hang up my playing hat for good. Needless to say, another band came along... I've been (for better or worse) hung up on both things ever since!
