That's actually kind of funny. Ever since I even knew of such stuff the Type III was widely considered to be the best of the bunch. In fact I still read about people trying to get their hands on one because it's the one that is most highly recommended by the greatest number of people on boards such as this.
I had one many years ago and I liked it, but I never had another iteration to which I could compare it. I also had it mounted on a pretty average turntable (Pioneer PL 570) so I can't say for sure that it was the bee's knees.
I had an awful lot to learn about sound, equipment and audio in general back then.
