An audio buddy of mine in town has an Sl-1600 and it's a pretty nice turntable. A fully automatic turntable for a newcomer is a plus (although a semi-automatic comes in a close second). I think an Audio Technica AT-95E would be a good cartridge. Set-up is easy enough that even I can do it.Cooincidentaly, last weekend I took a Technics SL-Q3 turntable to a young couple we know in Albuquerque. (We went up so I could attend The Kingston Trio Christmas concert.) Nice young folks; they were friends of my older son. I installed an AT-95E and it wounded pretty darn good considering the price. They had everything else they needed to set it up: interconnect cables, level, table to set it on, etc. Hope it serves them well.
I forgot, I also took 'em some Bob Dylan records. The lady of the house likes Bob Dylan.
