I may be wrong, but I though the sheild of either the left or right channel was connected to the arm. You can check easily enough with an ohm meter. Hum can be a real bear to track down. I chashed it all over one time and finally found that a shielded AC cord to the phono pre was the answer. On your Mac, since it doesn't use a 3-wire cord, try unplugging it and reversing it in the socket (e.g. rotate 180 degrees and plug back in).
