The rewire kit I have uses a little copper tension tab that sits inside the back of the arm tube where the stub screws into the arm. The wire runs out the bottom plug.

Doing it in a way that does not mess with the arm dynamics is the key. Seems like getting around the plug is the challenge. Maybe a rewire kit would be the thing to get.
