Lighter Fluid

I have often seen cigarette lighter fluid dispensed on a rag used to clean vinyl that is being graded in a few specialized shops I pop into on a regular basis.

I love the grading system (or is it the quality of the graders?) when most everything in the bins are NM, but that is not the point of my post here.

How can lighter fluid be any good for the vinyl?

Wiki indicates that this fluid is naphta.

Sounds pretty nasty to me compared with the specialized cleaners sold or the home brew recipes I keep seeing.
