Well, as usual, John is correct. My post is incorrect.
I went over and measured, and the measurement from the center of the platter to the pivot point of my 12" arm is about 11 1/2 inches. That would bring you to a point just short of the foot at the right rear of the TT. It would not be possible to mount the SME arm, which has a substantial base, within the TT plinth space.
The VPI arm, while overhanging the plinth is still within the space defined by the 4 legs of the TT which, as you can see is larger than the plinth itself. Long ago I constructed a cover for my TNT which tightly encloses the space defined by the legs and it also encloses the arm. Hence my too rapidly advanced conclusion.
