I have a PL, so I'm familiar with their "sound." Upgrading my phono stage to a tubed unit significantly improved sonics.
Prior to, I used a 1k retail SS which was good(Heed), then upped to a 2.5k retail tubed(Fosgate),no turning back for me.
Look at the Manley,Rogue and research the archives for plenty of suggestions.
Upgrading to a nicer phono stage will allow you to hear what your existing gear is capable of. After that, invest in a really nice cart.
