RE: Better Analogue front end for $3000 or less?

I would start with the cartridge. I feel the best values in cartridges come from companies like Denon and Audio Technica. This is just my opinion. Since your phono stage can handle a low-output moving coil cartridge, I would buy one. The Audio Technica AT33EV is a warm sounding cartridge that I find very musical. It is not too expensive at $500. If this does not satisfy you, it might be an indicator that your phono stage needs to be replaced.

Presently, I am using this cartridge with a Bob's Devices 1131 SUT into an inexpensive Yaqin MS-22B tube phono stage. It really sounds good in my system so you could start with the SUT and retain your Pro-Ject phono stage set for MM. The SUT will cost $1200. If that doesn't do the trick, the Yaqin MS-23B, which is the newest model, costs about $200.

This is just one idea and there are many other options available. The main point in my recommendation is to keep your turntable and start by replacing your phono cartridge and then move on to your phono stage.

Good luck,
John Elison
