I'm running a VPI Aries and I've also got the Minimax phono. I have the VPI/Bob's/Cinemag SUT.
I've also had a Dyna 10x4 in the past so I have some idea of the sound you are hearing.
From my understanding, the Classic series of turntables sounds 'leaner 'n meaner' than the traditional sound VPI is known for. The Dyna 10x is also somewhat lean, at least compared to some. On top of that, the Minimax is somewhat light and speedy in the bass, not what one would expect from a phono stage using 12ax7s, but this is certainly my experience with it. The sonic combination of all three might be somewhat lacking in the low end (just a guess).
The Minimax is a wonderful phono stage and tube rolling can really allow for differing sonic flavours.
The VPI/Bob's/Cinemag SUT is an improvement over the internal SUTs in the Minimax, but nothing earth shattering.
I would think you would be best trying to improve your cartridge. That is a quest all on it's own.
