When I was back in school we were assigned listening to various Debussy recordings and picking worst/best with explanations. The worst was Haitink. Half lit is right. Quite a bit of inner parts/details were obscured. I'm not anti-Haitink generally speaking.
I do like/own the Ansermet you mentioned. But I much prefer both Boulez/Cleve. and Maazel/Cleve. rather than the Haitink recordings. Every detail in the scores is brought out, beautiful balances, very nice sound on LP's.
I've never heard the Toscanini. I'll try to check that out.
