RE: nude Black

congradulations!! Been doing this for a bit but have ha some issues with prying the aluminum cover off. about 1 in 5 cartridges have the glue holding the coil wire attached to the cover and sometimes that glue will break off with the coil wire !!! Yikes: one dead cartridge.

I'll send you a bit of stuff to experiment with the cartridge which will elevate the performance to as good as the wood body models.

For now, a few tips, all of which are semi reversible, or, in the case of the cantilever, unimportant as you have the 8MZ coming in.

1. Take a refrigerator rubberized magnet and cut a roughly 1/8 inch square Snip the corners slightly (1mm or so): doesn't have to super precise. Place on the front of the cartridge. The magnetism of the cartridge should hold it in place. If the piece stands away cut another piece. On the rubberized magnets the poles alternate N-S so so may have cut a section which has the wrong polarity.

The weight change will be almost negligible so you can listen immediately and assess the tweak, Easier to remove and replace also, that way.

2. You will notice the Grado stylus assembly has a dab of black paint on the cantilever top for damping. One day while examining my glued fingers, I realized that super glue dries very hard and relatively brittle. I used fingernail polish remover ( acetone) dipped ont a q tip and wiped off the paint. I then took a toothpick and plied a thin bead of super glue. Wow ! super stiff cantilever, You may have to increase tracking force a little as the cantilever may start wiggling the arm on dynamic passages, but there is a lot more detail. Small amount only !!!!

To make cantilever even stiffer I have taken a shard of carbon fiber cut to the length of the cantilever and glued it on, Even stiffer and more damped cantilever that way. CF can be had at any fiberglass shop, BTW.
