RE: It's a Captain Beyond kind of day

I used to live on that street, had a brief fling with the light bulb lady.

The first album kicks ass from beginning to end. Bobby Caldwell tears up the drum kit with multiple time signatures (I swear there's a 13/8 in there somewhere.) Rod Evans has the perfect rock voice; my favorite Deep Purple albums are the early ones he's on. Rhino and Dorman keep the energy at max throughout, even in the quiet parts. My favorite of the 3.

"Breathless" backs off the intensity a notch, though there are some good rockers on there. Caldwell is absent but Rodriguez plays well and they brought in Guille Garcia for additional percussion, to replace Caldwell's other two hands I suppose. Great album.

"Dawn Explosion" brings back Caldwell but Evans is gone. This one is good but doesn't pack the wallop of the first one or quite the depth of the second. Still a good album. This time instead of levitating the sphere, the cover art shows the Captain hurling it at the listener...

I wish they had done more. Feel the same way about Cactus...

Best,
Mike
