the optical system measures stylus displacement in the direction of the two grove walls, while MC and MM cartridges measure velocity of the displacement. The whole point of the RIAA recording curve is to equalize the displacement over the frequency range (more or less) i.e a 15 kHz signal recorded at 0 db will make a wave the same size as a 40 Hz signal that requires a lot of boost in the high frequencies and attenuation of the low frequencies. Now if you have a device that measures the displacement then you do not need the de=emphasis used for velocity sensing devices....therefore the correction is not the typical RIAA curve but a different one which is quite simpler. Also the optical system needs DC current just like a strain gage.
