My favorite "Jaco era" is his early works pre- WR. Pat Methany's "Bright Size Life" album, while somewhat of a stunted performance compared to he and Jaco live, has some of the most sensitive playing of Jaco's career, IMHO. He isn't showboating, doing crazy things (literally!) or trying to run/ruin Methany's gig- just being a solid backer with the ability to take a solo when asked. That is the Jaco I truly miss!
BTW, when you saw his band (assuming some version of Word of Mouth?), was this during the 80's in NYC or Lauderdale? He was well on his (unfortunate) self-destructive way by this point!
