Listening to the performer's bow across the bass strings is an almost physical experience. The hall sound is wonderful, and the you-are-there imaging--violin front left, cello front right is absolutely incredible.
This particular Lp is one the less collectable Jean-Francois Pontefract recordings. I've been waiting to repurchase it for a couple of years now (after selling my record collection), and someone finally put it up for sale on ebay in the US. I won it for a mere $8.
I'm not a Haydn fan--Franz Joseph's music is often a little too "precious" for me--but the performances have a rustic, down home, country hoe-down quality to them that's irresistible.
