RE: could or should?

What is your calculation to adjust for inflation?

The last year the Technics SP-10 Mk 3 was marketed I found a price of $1700 for the table and $800 for the base so $2500.00 all told. So at 20K you are close to ten times the original price. Does that make sense?

There are more factors than inflation to be considered.

Just for fun I looked up a Porsche 911 of 1978 and the base model was around $39,800.00. A present day 911 is around $84,300.00. And you get way more car in 2014 than back then, model for model. These are rough numbers based on a quick check on the web and they could be off some. But by your reckoning a 911 should be around 318 K?

So I would think that Technics would be able to market a modern and improved version of an SP-10 Mk 3 for about 5-6 K, assuming there is enough volume, and that is where we get into trouble. Panasonic will never build anything in small batches like top of the line turntables. Add to that the fact that the market will ultimately set the price so that it could be just about anything if kept in line with the prices of boutique manufacturers.

In terms of ballpark figures, I am told that a 2014 dollar is about 364% bigger than a 1978 dollar. You are adding 700% to the 1978 price.

Something is wrong if you simply point out inflation and arrive at 20K.

At any rate all this is fantasy.

I don't want to start a kerfuffle, I simply think that the number you arrive at to adjust for inflation is of the type only found on audio sites. I could be wrong, my numbers could be off, but your estimate seems wild to me based on inflation.

Now if you told me that Teechnics should ask 20 K to have any cred with audiophiles, I think you would be on to something.
