start up noise

This gets better as the table breaks in. Mine still makes a slight noise but out of the box it was really loud. I've had mine over a year now and it functions perfectly. Also, I put some light talc on the belt and that helped significantly. I don't care for the motor start up noise either but I don't think it is an indication of a low quality product. My reading of the tea leaves is VPI wanted to make a table with high sound quality and low costs. To achieve that they sacrificed in a couple ultimately trivial areas such as a motor with a start up noise and the sorbothane mat. Both perform very well but have some esthetic compromises. It comes down to this I think, would you pay another $100 for a quiet starting motor? VPI decided most people probably wouldn't.

I am very happy with mine and I suspect you will be too. Just put some talc on the belt and let it break it. I continuously ran mine a week or two when I first got it.
