I'm active on several hobby related forums (record collecting, cacti & succulents, etc...) and have a personal facebook page with hundreds of photos.
One fairly active group "Record Collectors Paradise" has members ranging from tyros with Crosleys to long time collectors/audiophiles with expensive gear. Sometimes that wide range of experience adds fresh perspective and engaging conversation.
As for fears or hesitation in joining and participating on facebook, it's worth noting that privacy settings can be very restrictive or relatively loose as one sees fit. It's also possible to use a 'screen name' and provide a completely false birth date and personal information.
